“I am 55, did my first 1/2 in April. I’ve only been running since April 2020 and have done a total of 3 1/2 marathons and will start training for a full soon. I used a Fitbit until sept of 2021 when my running coach suggested a Garmin So I now use the Garmin 245. I switched to the Garmin because of the GPS, the tracking of miles run, heart rate, split times, the different exercise modes: swim, bike, treadmill walk or run, strength and cardio Better tracking of the heart rate. Plus easier transition from swim/bike/run as I also have done a couple of sprint triathlons.”
“I used to have a Nike watch before I switched over to Apple and it would sync directly with the app. At the time I was still in high school and ran Cross Country so it was helpful to track all of my miles, pace, times, etc throughout the week/season. The GPS made it easy to track my routes and save my runs. I could also run with friends & accept challenges that made running on off days a bit more fun.
When I was younger I liked that it was all free and I didn’t have to pay to use any of it. I also liked all of the motivational speeches I’d hear before and after starting my workout. They had famous celebrities like Kevin Hart say a few phrases which I always thought was funny & Olympic runners who were pretty helpful and inspirational.”
What about the app makes it helpful for your training experience?
“Being able to log all of my training instantly after workouts and review them side by side when I needed was incredibly useful. It was especially helpful during Cross Country season when I needed to adjust training based on my progress. It was helpful for my coach to look at too.”

“I ran competitively for 12 years all throughout college. My first race was in the 6th grade (around 2010). We didn’t have enough money to sign me up so my coach at the time paid for me to run Cross Country for the year. Not only did I beat all the girls, but I beat all the boys too except for one. I remember my coach yelling at me during the race because I was messing around and waving my hands at someone for a picture. He was happy for me at the end but added, “You could have beat everyone if you weren’t messing around out there.”
“I think that’s the first time someone pointed my potential out to me and I realized there was other ways to use running other than just for fun. I ended up running Cross Country up until my sophomore year of college & I ran the Hurdles from 9th grade until my 5th year in college, leaving with All-American status and a lot of incredible experiences. I mostly run for workouts & to de-stress now.”
“I love using Strava for many reasons! I really like the tracking accuracy and nice modern look of the maps. I also really like that you can join challenges and win prizes based off of your daily activity. Out of everything, my favorite feature is that you can add pictures to your activities. I love taking pictures and also pairing memories with each of my runs! “
“Strava is unique to other tracking apps because you can add friends and interact with their activities. I find this really motivating and inspiring because you are constantly being exposed by new ideas and accomplishments made by your friends! Accountability and support is so important to me!”
“I think the feature that helps with my training the most is the accountability aspect of the app! I am motivated to go out and train to not only keep up with my training partners, but also because I know others are also using my activity for their motivation. My favorite part about athletics in general is the team aspect- this app helps promote this! “

“I have been running for about 4 years! I grew up hating running, thinking of it as a punishment and something I was not very good at. After going through a big life change in 2019, my brother encouraged me to sign up for a the White Squirrel triathlon to re-motivate me. I am still so thankful for this! Since, I have learned to enjoy running, the challenges that come along with it and most importantly the time for mental clarity it gives me. Living a busy and chaotic life, running has been therapeutic for me. Now, I continue to do the White Squirrel tri each year and chase other races throughout the year- my new favorite being the Vincennes Historical Half Marathon!”
